Washing Machine Not Spinning: What's Actually Wrong

It's Rarely the Motor

When a washer won't spin, most people assume the motor is dead and start pricing a replacement. In our experience across Fort Collins, the motor is actually the least common cause. Nine times out of ten it's one of three things: a worn drive belt, a failed lid or door switch, or an overloaded/unbalanced drum that's tripping the safety sensor.

Check the Load First

Before anything else, open the washer and check if the load is unbalanced or oversized. Most modern washers won't spin at all if the sensor detects an uneven load, it's a safety feature, not a malfunction. Redistribute the laundry evenly around the drum and try again.

Listen for the Belt

Top-load washers with a belt-drive motor will often agitate fine but fail to spin, or spin very slowly with a burning rubber smell. That's almost always a worn or snapped drive belt. It's an affordable, same-visit repair on most brands.

Test the Lid/Door Switch

If the drum doesn't spin at all and you don't hear the motor engage, the lid switch (top-load) or door lock switch (front-load) may have failed. These switches are a safety mechanism that prevents the machine from spinning with the door open, and they wear out over years of use.

When It's the Motor or Control Board

If you've ruled out load balance, the belt sounds fine, and the switch tests okay, the motor itself or the control board driving it may have failed. This is less common but does happen on higher-mileage machines, especially direct-drive front-loaders.
