The Filter Is the First Thing We Check

Most front-load and many top-load washers have an accessible drain pump filter, usually behind a small panel at the bottom front of the machine. Coins, buttons, hair ties, and small socks collect there over time and can fully block drainage. This is genuinely the cause in a large share of the 'won't drain' calls we run.

Kinked or Clogged Drain Hose

The hose running from the back of the washer to your drain standpipe can kink if the machine has shifted, or it can clog with lint and detergent buildup over years of use. Worth checking the full length, not just where it connects.

Drain Pump Failure

If the filter is clear and the hose isn't kinked, the drain pump itself may have failed, either the motor burned out or the impeller is jammed with debris that got past the filter. This is a straightforward part replacement in most cases.

Error Codes That Point to Drain Issues

Samsung's 5C, LG's OE, Bosch's E18, Frigidaire's E20/E21, and GE's E2 all point toward drain-related faults. If your machine displays a code, that alone can save diagnostic time.

Why It Backs Up Instead of Just Stopping

Water sitting in the drum for hours can start to smell and, on some models, will trigger an overflow safety shutoff. Don't run another cycle or add more water hoping it'll clear itself, that can make the clog worse or push water where it shouldn't go.
